MPL Author Event to Spotlight “Waltraud”: Memories of Growing up in Germany During WWII

The following article was written by Laura Schreiner, an Interlibrary Laon Associate with Manitowoc Public Library.

“We are all stories in the end—just make it a good one.”  Matt Smith, the 11th Doctor Who.

Most people love a good story . . . whether hearing, reading, viewing or telling one. On Monday, November 18, Manitowoc Public Library is offering you the opportunity to hear a fascinating story from World War II Germany. The storyteller is New London, Wisconsin, author, Tammy Borden. The story is that of her mother’s life growing up in Nazi Germany. Tammy will be speaking about her book, titled “Waltraud: A True Story of Growing Up in Nazi Germany,” which was published in 2023 and has been well received by readers in East-Central Wisconsin.

“Waltraud” offers the unique opportunity to hear about what life was like before, during, and after World War II from the perspective of a German citizen. The book captures a rare glimpse into the rise and fall of the Third Reich and one young woman’s courageous journey to follow her heart, no matter the cost.

Tammy states that the story is “a World War II novel based on true events” and that “this unforgettable story takes you through a journey of love, loss, strength and resistance. If you enjoy rich historical fiction based on true stories, you’ll love my mom’s.” Tammy has appeared at several area libraries, and her story has made its way onto local television news, as well. We are excited to offer local residents an opportunity to see Tammy in-person and hear firsthand more about her mother’s life.

A little background on how we here at Manitowoc Public Library became aware of Tammy and her book: Tammy happens to be a coworker and friend of my daughter’s mother-in law, Tina.  My “outlaw” Tina and I have been “booktalking” for twelve years, almost since the day our children began dating.

Tina and I share a love of historical fiction and she’s been recommending “Waltraud” ever since she read it. This remarkable true story of heroism, heartache, and hope told through young Waltraud’s eyes really touched Tina, and I wholeheartedly agree that this sweeping family saga is one worth reading and hearing about. (Side note: Tina and I now share not only our passion for books, but the gift of three beautiful grandchildren. A rather heartwarming story, there, too)

In addition to speaking about “Waltraud,” Tammy will also be discussing another compelling and inspiring set of events put in motion by the book and her deep dive into World War II research. No further hints given here—we will leave that for Tammy to tell. I promise it’s an unforgettable and touching story.

Please join us at 6 PM on Monday, November 18, in the library’s Balkansky Commuinity Room.  Tammy will be available for conversation, and book purchasing and signing, both before and after the event. We look forward to sharing an evening of compelling stories with all of you.
