Is our Baby Storytime overwhelming for your little one?  If so, this new program could be the perfect fit!

Manitowoc Public Library is thrilled to introduce a new initiative aimed at making Storytime more inclusive and enjoyable for our youngest readers. This new program, designed for babies and toddlers aged 0-2 years, seeks to create a welcoming environment for children with sensory processing challenges, ensuring that every child can participate in the joys of reading and early literacy activities.

Join us on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at 10:30 AM for SENSE-ational Baby Storytime. Registration is required and can be completed online at www.manitowoclibrary.org/event/sense-ational-baby-storytime-nov or by calling 920-686-3030.

Why Sensory-Friendly Baby Storytime?

Traditional Storytimes can sometimes be overwhelming for small children with sensory processing challenges. Bright lights, loud noises, and large groups can create a stressful environment, making it difficult for these children to fully participate. Sensory-Friendly Baby Storytime addresses these challenges by creating a calm and structured setting where little ones can thrive.

What to Expect

Sensory-Friendly Baby Storytime is thoughtfully designed to cater to the unique needs of babies and toddlers with sensory processing challenges. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Calm Environment: Storytime will take place in a quiet, comfortable space with dimmed lighting and minimal background noise. Soft seating options will be available, but often a caregiver’s lap is best for small children to feel secure and relaxed. Program capacity is capped at 12 children.
  • Visual Schedule: A visual schedule, featuring simple images, will help caregivers prepare their child for transitions between program elements, such as reading, singing, bounces, and cooperative play.
  • Interactive Reading: The program will feature books with simple, repetitive text and engaging illustrations. Interactive elements like touch-and-feel books and lift-the-flap books will keep little ones engaged and curious.
  • Sensory Activities: Various sensory activities will engage different senses. Children can explore textured materials, play with musical instruments, and enjoy colorful props and puppets.
  • Movement Breaks: To help toddlers release energy and stay engaged, the session will incorporate movement activities such as simple dances, action songs, gentle stretches, bubbles, and bounces.

Supporting Families

The library recognizes the importance of involving parents and caregivers in early literacy activities. Caregivers are encouraged to participate alongside their children, providing a supportive and familiar presence. The library will offer resources and tips on how to create sensory-friendly activities at home to continue supporting their child’s sensory and literacy development.

By offering Sensory-Friendly Storytime, Manitowoc Public Library is taking a significant step towards inclusivity and accessibility. This program not only supports early literacy, but also fosters a sense of community and belonging for all families, helping young children develop social skills and confidence in a judgement-free setting. Come and experience a Storytime where all babies and toddlers can feel comfortable, engaged, and excited about reading!
